St Louis hosts one of the largest hot air balloon festivals in the country. On a Saturday afternoon in September, it draws upwards of 100,000 people each year to witness the "Hare and Hound" race. Spectators can watch "up front and personally" the filling of these balloons and the launch. The race is held in Forest park, which is the home of the 1904 World's Fair. It is just a good time mingling with the masses over picnic lunches and music and plenty of hot air.
